There are few things worse than going to get a manicure done and coming home to realize you hate the color of your dipped nails.

Maybe the powder your nail tech showed you looked like a different color when it was in the can.

Maybe you tried something new hoping it would work out and it didn’t.

Whatever the cause, if you hate your dipped nails, there are many options for how you can fix it!

I Don’t Like The Color Of My Dipped Nails—10 Things You Can Do

1. Talk to Your Nail Artist About a Redo

You might have to bite the bullet and pay for a redo.

In most cases, you select the color of the nail.

If you were the one to pick the color, you have to own up to your choice.

However, experienced nail techs should have examples to show you each dip nail color, usually on a tray of false nails.

If your nail tech only showed you the color of the powder in the jar and the finished product looks significantly different, don’t be afraid to ask them for a new set of nails.

It can be difficult to talk to your nail tech about not liking their work.

The best time to do it is right when they finish and ask how you like your set.

Even if you went home before you realized it, you can still call back to tell them.

Explain to them that the color was significantly different than what was in the pot.

If you are telling them after your appointment, you can even say:

“I really appreciate the work you put in to do this set for me, and I didn’t want you to feel bad at the end of the appointment. I decided to wear the nail to see if I could adjust to the color and make it work. However, it just isn’t working with my wardrobe. Can I have a redo?”

You aren’t guaranteed that your nail tech will offer you a redo free of charge, but it is worth asking.

The important thing is to talk to them kindly.

When you approach people with grace, they are much more likely to help you out.

If it was truly your fault, ask for a redo but explain that you are willing to pay for it.

Maintaining a good relationship with your nail tech is worth more than a redone nail set, especially if the mistake was yours.

You can avoid having to go through the situation again by more carefully selecting the color.

2. Paint Over It

The reason most people get dip nails is so they don’t have to paint their fingernails, so painting over dip nails somewhat defeats their purpose.

However, if you really dislike the color but don’t want to spend the money on a new set, painting over it might be the best option.

If you do choose to paint over your dip nails, make sure you use an acetone-free nail polish remover if you change the color or remove the polish.

Using nail polish remover with acetone will remove or damage the dip nails.

If you don’t absolutely hate the color of your dip nails but you feel they need a little extra something, you might want to try a design or accent over the nail.

Maybe doing French tips, a glitter top coat or adding some nail accessories will help the nail have your desired look.

This way, you will be able to take advantage of the dip manicure as your base while still customizing it to your needs.

3. Consult a Stylist

If you find yourself regularly selecting nail colors and then hating them when your nails are finally done, this might be a sign that you should invest in a stylist to help you out.

While many stylists typically deal only in clothes, others can help you with all aspects of your style.

Even if your stylist normally doesn’t advise on nail color, it could be worth asking them about it.

After all, an eye for fashion usually requires a knowledge of what colors suit someone.

Since dip nails are a month-long commitment, they will be able to advise you on what colors to avoid because they clash with your wardrobe.

They will also be able to suggest what colors might work best for you.

You could also ask a makeup artist to help you out in choosing the perfect fit for your next dip nail.

4. Switch to Press-On Nails

Dip nails are not a good choice for people who like to frequently change up their nails or are indecisive about color.

The main advantage of getting your dip nails done is that you will have a good-looking colored manicure that will last up to a month.

If you don’t want to have the same look all month long, this will be more of a con than a pro for you.

One way to solve this could be switching to press-on nails.

Some people don’t like press-on nails because they don’t have the same staying power as dip nails or acrylics.

However, this might be a good thing if you like to change the color of your nails frequently.

If you want your nails to match your outfit each day, press-on nails are a great option to get a new look with minimal damage and time investment.

While you can use certain techniques to make press-on nails last one week or even two, you can also use weak adhesive purposely to be able to change the nails easily after a day or two.

On Amazon, you can usually find huge sets of press-on nails in various colors for extremely affordable prices.

5. Do a DIY Removal

If you don’t want to go to your nail tech to get your nails removed, you can do a DIY nail removal.

The best way to remove dip nails is with acetone polish.

This is why you should never use acetone to remove any nail polish you put on top of your dipped nails.

The process of removing dip nails is similar to the process of removing acrylic nails because dip nails are made with acrylic.

One of the simplest ways to remove your dip nails is with an acetone soak.

Fill up a small bowl with acetone and stick your fingertip in the bowl.

Make sure that you don’t have any cuts on your fingertips when you do this or the acetone will make it burn!

After you soak them for a few minutes, rub off the dipped nails.

You can do this with a cotton ball covered in acetone.

If it still isn’t coming off, try dipping your fingers in the acetone again.

It should take no longer than 10 minutes of total time in the acetone to get the dipped nails soft enough to remove.

If you are having a hard time removing your nails with this method, you might want to buff down the dipped nails before you put them in the acetone.

Take your nail file and file down the top coat of the nail until all the shininess is gone.

Then try putting them in the acetone soak again.

6. Go with a Neutral Color

If you always get sick of your dip color before it is time for a replacement, that might be a sign that you should pick a neutral color next time you get your nails done.

This option is especially good if you want to be able to dress yourself up and down.

If you have a mixture of casual, formal, and business events in store for the month, it is going to be far easier to navigate them if you go with a natural nail color.

The great thing about nail neutrals is that they are a bit more flexible than actual neutrals.

While a light pink would not be considered a neutral shoe color, it is very neutral when you wear it on your nails.

Neutral colors are guaranteed to look good with everything in your wardrobe, all the time!

7. Make a Capsule Wardrobe

If you loved your nail color when you were in the salon only to hate it after you left, you might want to ask yourself why.

It could be because the color clashes with your clothes and makes it hard to put together a coherent outfit.

If you have too many different styles going on, it might be impossible to pick one color to last an entire month.

A huge reason women gravitate toward dipped nails over other nail styles is their simplicity and how long they last.

If that is the reason you are getting your dipped nails done, consider simplifying your wardrobe, too.

Then select one of the colors from your wardrobe to use for your nails.

Typically, with a capsule wardrobe, you pick a collection of colors that are fairly neutral with one or two statement colors thrown in.

If you like bold nails, you can get them done in one of your statement colors.

If you like natural nails, you can get them done in one of your neutrals.

Whichever color you go with, it is sure to match all the other parts of your wardrobe.

8. Remove the Top Coat

If your nail tech painted your dip nails, the solution is easy and straightforward!

Simply use a non-acetone remover to take off the polish.

If you like the color underneath, then you can leave it as is! If you find the color of the dip nail is a little dull in appearance after you have removed the polish, simply put on a clear top coat to make it shiny again.

9. Use Nail Stickers

If you don’t want to use nail polish over the top of your dip nails, nail stickers can be another great way to change up your nail look without getting your dip nails entirely redone.

You can find a variety of different nail stickers in almost any design you want.

There are two main types of nail stickers you will encounter.

The first type is accessory stickers.

These do not cover the whole nail but add a small image onto your nails.

The second type of sticker is a full-coverage nail sticker.

This will cover the entire nail.

When searching for nail stickers, you want to go with a high-quality one that has good reviews.

One of the great things about using nail stickers is that they can be extremely affordable.

You can find many options on websites like Amazon.

In fact, some nail stickers are so affordable that you can easily experiment with different types.

Dip nails are actually the perfect candidates for nail stickers.

Since nail stickers don’t change the shape of your nail, they can be hard to use on natural nails if your nail shape isn’t perfectly sculpted and even.

Even if you don’t like the color of your dipped nails, they should still give you the perfect length and structure.

Thus, applying nail stickers will solve the problem completely!

Another great benefit to using nail stickers is that you can change them up frequently.

If you do want to remove your nail stickers, make sure not to use acetone.

Remember, this will remove not only the nail sticker but the dip nail as well!

If your nail stickers aren’t peeling off by themselves, you can soak them in hot water.

You might have to soak them for up to 20 minutes, but after you do soak them, they should come right off!

When applying your nail stickers, don’t forget to file away all of the excess adhesive.

When you do this, make sure you are gentle and don’t damage the dip nail underneath.

It is also a best practice to add a top coat to your nail.

This will make sure that your sticker lasts longer.

If you know you want to change your stickers after a few days, though, you probably want to hold off on the top coat.

10. Apply Glitter

Pink nails. Female manicure and floral patterns.

If you really want a different look but you don’t have any other nail colors on hand, you can cover the nail completely in glitter! Take some brush-on nail glue and apply it to the nail.

Then dip your nail in the glitter.

Alternatively, you can sprinkle the glitter on top of your nail.

If you don’t want to waste glitter, do this on top of a piece of paper.

Then bend the paper in the center and use it as a funnel to pour the overflow glitter back into the glitter container.

The only downside to using just glitter and nail glue is that you will have some fall out.

You might find glitter all around your house, and it can be tough to remove!

If you want to play it safe, it is best to add a top coat onto the nail over the glitter.

Not only will this prevent fall out from occurring, but it will also give your nail a shiny finish.
